About Chapter 3

Many children play a sport as a result of chance. For example, they enter a program because their friends are involved; or it might be a matter of practical factors, such as location and availability. In such cases, parents typically know relatively little about a program, its philosophy, or the nature of the leadership provided.

To ensure that participation occurs in a high-quality program, it’s highly desirable to have parental involvement and guidance in the selection process. Youngsters can’t be expected to critically evaluate a sport program on their own. They need the assistance of their parents. If an appropriate program is selected, many unnecessary difficulties and problems can be avoided.
